Throughout history, great artists have recounted the human experience in a universal language of form and beauty. The Montblanc Masters of Art collection celebrates their enduring contribution to the pursuit of perfection in art, a quest to which Montblanc pays tribute and participates. One artist, through his vision, contributed to the emergence of Viennese Art Nouveau and the Golden Age: Gustav Klimt. The Montblanc Masters of Art Homage to Gustav Klimt Limited Edition 4810 celebrates his artistic beginnings in the Vienna Secession and incorporates striking elements from his works Pallas Athena and The Kiss in its design. In his rejection of stereotypes in art and society, Gustav Klimt was a pioneer at the forefront of the movement. He blended realistic representation, decoration, and abstraction in a style that reached its zenith in his large-format paintings, portraits of women imbued with subtle sensuality. One of his earliest canvases, where the embellishments are matched only by the subject, was a 1902 portrait of his companion and muse, Emilie Flöge, depicted in a dreamlike, almost mystical shade of blue. This work inspired the blue hue of Montblanc's Masters of Art Homage to Gustav Klimt Limited Edition 4810. The circles, undulations, triangles, and lines that shimmer through the writing instrument's translucent dark blue lacquer are inspired by his famous painting The Kiss, in which two lovers appear to merge into geometric ornamental forms through the power of emotion. Composed of transparent blue lacquer and hammered metal plated with yellow gold, the cap and barrel of the writing instrument make the most of complementary colors, a nod to famous works from Gustav Klimt's "Golden Cycle," such as Adele Bloch-Bauer I, the Stoclet Frieze, and The Kiss. Klimt used a novel technique to enrich his colors with individual pieces of gold leaf, creating the illusion of gemstones set in gold. For the Limited Edition 4810, the hammered cone plated with yellow gold is inlaid with a synthetic green spinel, a color that evokes spring, the season of renewal. Klimt's Secessionist monogram, his initials GK in gold foil stamping, echoes his contributions to the Vienna Secession. The Homage to Gustav Klimt Limited Edition 4810 clasp is specially created in reference to Gustav Klimt's Pallas Athena. Athena, the goddess of both war and the arts, is depicted leading the fight for artistic freedom. The gently curved lines, terminating in three spirals, of the yellow gold-plated clasp evoke the decoration of the forged metal frame.
